Freedom or Death poster

Hello guys, I hope you are well.

Today is the anniversary of Greece's Independence. To celebrate the occasion, I have a work based on a drawing that I made during the pandemic. That drawing hangs on the door to my bedroom.

The work centres around the Greek flag and the story behind its nine stripes. One theory is they represent each syllable of the motto 'Eleutheria H Thanatos' (Want me to break it down for you? 'e-lef-the-ri-a i tha-na-tos'). It means 'Freedom or Death'. This idea makes for a great abstract poster concept in my opinion.

On the cross, I have added another motto, 'Zito H Ellada' ('Long live Greece'), with a depiction of a teradrachm coin featuring the Owl of Athena.

On the reverse of the poster I have drawn a Greek helmet, with the motto 'Molon Labe' ('Come and get them'), spoken by the Spartan King Leonidas in response to the Persians' ultimatum to surrender their weapons at Thermopylae.

I have made two versions of both the obverse and reverse. In the second version of the obverse, the motto 'Zito H Ellada' and the tetradrachm have been replaced with an outline of Greece with the colours counterchanging on said outline. The second version of the reverse sees a different Greek maeander key up to the edges.

The first version of both the obverse and reverse are the ones most true to the hand drawn poster I made.

This poster was made to conform to an A4 paper, although the sizes are larger than I anticipated. The work took me quite a while to make. I realised that working with an A4 paper on screen is one hell of a problem compared to art done by hand. Getting the cross done right while maintaining an equal space for each of the letters on the stripes was not an option, so I compromised and shortened the vertical bar of the cross somewhat. A bit of a bummer, but that doesnt affect my satisfaction for the final piece.

I hope you like my work. Any comments and criticism wil be welcome.

Bye.
